It is considered as the larger religious activity during the Holy Week
Cuzco.- Around seventy thousand believers will join today, at 2.30 pm, the traditional procession and blessing of the Lord of the Earthquakes in Cusco.
The Saint statues will be carried from the Cathedral and will travel round during several hours the streets of Sapy, Santa Teresa, Siete Cuartones, Granada, Marqués, Mantas and the El Sol avenue, as well as San Francisco y Espinar squares. This event will be massively followed by the believers which will pack the monumental zone, with the hope of being blessed by the Lord.
The best places to observe the procession are the colonial and republican balconies of the streets. Along the way, the Lord of the Earthquakes statue receives a literal “bath” of flowers called ñucchu, which is a native flower used by the Incas to bless the sacred things.
During the tour, the Crucified Christ makes two stops, one at the Santa Teresa Convent, the other at the Merced Basilica, where it will receive catholic rites.
The cult to the Lord of the Earthquakes started at the beginning of the XVII century and is supposed to have taken great force in 1650, when the Statue is said to have saved the city by stopping and earthquake.
The traditional procession and blessing of the Lord will end around 7pm.
